Complete season box sets of the original Star Trek series are in the planning stages for DVD release in both Region 1 and Region 2. Paramount gave the long-awaited confirmation to The Digital Bits about the upcoming U.S. release. "I've officially confirmed with Paramount that complete season box sets of Star Trek: The Original Series are in the planning stages for DVD release here in the States," wrote Bill Hunt. "However, you probably shouldn't expect them until after most of the work on the Star Trek: Voyager complete season DVDs is finished." Voyager is expected to be released one set at a time throughout 2004, so the original series may not hit the market until 2005. The R2 Project reports that the original series will be released in box sets on DVD in Region 2 as well, beginning in 2004. DVD Answers also has a brief item on the planned sets. www.trektoday.com/news/161003_02.shtml

The original Star Trek series on DVD will reportedly come with two versions of original series pilot "The Cage", commentaries by Denise & Michael Okuda on three episodes, and a visit to William Shatner (Kirk)'s ranch, among other extras. The R2 Project has claimed that the Region 2 release, viewable in Europe, will package all first-season episodes by order of air date along with their original trailers, plus many special features. A documentary on the birth of Star Trek will include interviews with Shatner, Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and Robert Justman, with another Nimoy interview in a feature on Spock. Shatner will speak about life after Star Trek, including convention appearances, and a number of cast members will discuss romance on the series. In addition, a Season 1 production documentary, "To Boldly Go...", will provide a behind-the-scenes at "The Naked Time", "The City On the Edge of Forever", "The Squire of Gothos" and "The Devil in the Dark", and there will be a group special about Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Other features will explore the connections between cast members, guest stars and other shows and films, and science fiction visionary writers such as D.C. Fontana, Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison and Gene Roddenberry including interviews with Fontana and others. An illustration of the original series set, which has a probable release date of August 30th, is here, while the original news item is here. DVD Answers has the information and pictures of all three box sets as well. www.trektoday.com
